Convertor and/or downstream O2 sensor issue. Some forums and other websites say the O2 sensor is not involved, others do, code p0420 honda civic 1999 but what they all agree on is the cat. "Below Efficiency Threshold" 2 out of 2 people think this is helpful. Mark helpful 3,060 Report Michael answered 3 years ago Correct. The rear oxygen code p0420 honda civic 2002 sensor is telling the computer that the catalytic converter is not working efficiently enough. So really it could be either part. Thise problem is best diagnosed by someone with a professional level scan tool as it requires reading the waveform and switching rate of the oxygen sensor. Of course if you dont mind spending money, you could just replace the rear oxygen sensor itself and hope thats
it. 3 out of 3 people think this is helpful. Mark helpful 145 Report John answered 3 years ago P0420 is simply "cat efficiency below threshold" Borrow a scan tool that has the appropriate obd1 connector for the car, and look at the PID data. You should see the voltage fluctuate from like .1v to.9v on a working sensor. IF YOU ARE RUNNING AN AFTERMARKET CATALYTIC CONVERTER OR TEST PIPE, YOU WILL THROW THIS CODE... If that is the case, simply search on a site like passwordjdm.com for a mechanical o2 sim. That will fix that issue. 3 out of 3 people think this is helpful. Got it scanned and it's P0420: Catalyst efficiency below threshold bank 1. They said it could be a bad catalytic converter or oxygen sensor. http://mechanics.stackexchange.com/questions/1874/check-engine-code-p0420-catalyst-efficiency-below-threshold-bank-1 I borrowed a scanner and tried to measure the oxygen sensor readings over time. Doesn't seem to have good time resolution: This is voltage vs "time", though I don't know what units "time" is in, or if this is useful in any way. The code did not occur during this graph, anyway. Apparently the sensors are supposed to switch on and off like this? The lambda sensor's output voltage should not remain constant, however. It should flip-flop back and forth from rich to lean as the PCM increases and then decreases the amount of petrol injected into the intake manifold. Every time the voltage reverses itself and goes from high to low or vice versa, it's called a "cross count." A good O2 sensor on an injection system should fluctuate from rich to lean about 1 per second. If the number of cross counts is lower than this, it tells you the O2 sensor is getting sluggish and needs to be replaced. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/obd2scan2.htm Though another site says: Once a fully functional catalyst is up to working temperature and is “lit”, we should see a nice “flat line” signal from the downstream sensor, which shows that the exhaust gases have been successfully converted. http://www.picoauto.com/tutorials/cat-efficiency.html An example of a single frame: MIL STATUS OFF ABSLT TPS % 25.4 ENG SPEED RPM 3018 CALC
(DTC) is a generic powertrain code. It is considered generic because it applies to all makes and models of vehicles (1996-newer), although specific repair steps may be slightly different https://www.obd-codes.com/p0420 depending on the model. So this engine code article applies to Nissan, Toyota, Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, GMC, etc. The catalytic converter is a part of the exhaust system that looks kind of like a muffler, although it's job is very different from that of a muffler. A catalytic converter's job is to reduce emmissions from the exhaust. The catalytic converter has an p0420 honda oxygen sensor in front and behind it. When the vehicle is warm and running in closed loop mode, the upstream oxygen sensor waveform reading should fluctuate. The downstream O2 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar. This is indicative of (among other things) a converter that p0420 honda civic is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). Catalytic converters are not normally a "wear" type item, that is they are not deisgned to wear out and need replacement. If they have failed, it is likely due to something else that caused it to fail. Symptoms The main symptom to the driver is the illumination of the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp). You will likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms. For example, if the substance inside the catalytic converter is broken or failed, it may be restricting the exhaust which will result in a feeling of reduced power output from the vehicle. Causes A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened: Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for A damaged or failed oxygen sensor (HO2S) Downstream oxygen sensor (HO2S) wiring damaged or connected improperly The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / muffler / exhaust pipe Retarded spark timing The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are

A Windows error is an error that happens when an unexpected condition occurs or when a desired operation has failed. When you have an error in Windows, it may be critical and cause your programs to freeze and crash or it may be seemingly harmless yet annoying.
A stop error screen or bug check screen, commonly called a blue screen of death (also known as a BSoD, bluescreen), is caused by a fatal system error and is the error screen displayed by the Microsoft Windows family of operating systems upon encountering a critical error, of a non-recoverable nature, that causes the system to "crash".
One of the biggest causes of DLL's becoming corrupt/damaged is the practice of constantly installing and uninstalling programs. This often means that DLL's will get overwritten by newer versions when a new program is installed, for example. This causes problems for those applications and programs that still need the old version to operate. Thus, the program begins to malfunction and crash.
Computer hanging or freezing occurs when either a program or the whole system ceases to respond to inputs. In the most commonly encountered scenario, a program freezes and all windows belonging to the frozen program become static. Almost always, the only way to recover from a system freeze is to reboot the machine, usually by power cycling with an on/off or reset button.
Once your computer has been infected with a virus, it's no longer the same. After removing it with your anti-virus software, you're often left with lingering side-effects. Technically, your computer might no longer be infected, but that doesn't mean it's error-free. Even simply removing a virus can actually harm your system.
Reimage repairs and replaces all critical Windows system files needed to run and restart correctly, without harming your user data. Reimage also restores compromised system settings and registry values to their default Microsoft settings. You may always return your system to its pre-repair condition.
